Swarthmore Town Center
Swarthmore Town Center, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, seeks to strengthen community, promote the downtown as an exciting place to live, shop and invest; improve the appearance of and access to the downtown, and to receive, administer and distribute funds in connection with any activities related to the above purposes.  

Town Center Coordinator
The Town Center Coordinator is responsible for the promotion, activities, and physical aspects of the Swarthmore Town Center under the direction of the STC Board of Directors. Informs the strategic direction and priorities of Swarthmore Town Center based on the evolving needs of the business district.

Reports to the President of the Board of Directors of Swarthmore Town Center, Inc. Activities of the position are carried out in close coordination with the Borough Manager, Public Works, Police and Fire departments, merchants, residents and other Swarthmore organizations. 

The Coordinator position is part-time, 20 hours/week, with 4 weeks paid vacation. Compensation is $26,000 per year.  The Coordinator shall work from home and be visible in the Town Center.

Specific Duties
1. Manage marketing and social media for the Town Center.

  • Writes and publishes monthly town center newsletter, keeping track of all town center related events, exhibitions and activities for each month’s content.
  • Maintains and updates STC website; responsible for building increased traffic, making site improvements and posting event information in a timely manner.
  • Updates and manages STC social media accounts.

2. Create and coordinate Town Center events and activities.

  • Engage with merchants, Swarthmore College and other organizations to develop, collaborate, and cross-promote events and activities in the Town Center and in the Borough.
  • Work with members of STC Events Committee in implementing and promoting town events.  (Examples include: Home for the Holidays, Thursday Night Live…)
  • Responsible for event planning from concept to day-of trouble shooting and coordination; including scheduling, planning and attending meetings with all involved parties, coordinating with merchants, Borough police, and public works; ensuring an STC presence during the course of the event; promoting the event including, but not limited to, print advertising, web promotion, and printing and distributing related materials such as posters, programs and train station banner.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Farmers Market committee.

 3. Maintain ongoing communication with local businesses regarding Borough matters, including ordinances, maintenance, parking, signage and other related issues.

 4. Serve as a point person for property owners and potential new tenants to provide information on the Town Center and the Borough.

5. In conjunction with the Beautification committee, develop and organize projects to improve the appearance of the Town Center.

  • Works with Borough Administration, Public Works Department, Police and Fire Departments on matters related to the physical maintenance of the town center.
  • Develop placemaking opportunities (ie parklets) for town center vitality.
  • Organizes and helps install holiday decorating in town center.
  • Coordinates efforts with the Horticultural Society for Beautification Days (twice a year)
  • Coordinate the changeover and replacement of street post flags.

6. Develop sponsorship and funding initiatives for the Town Center.

  • Research  grant opportunities
  • Develop  sponsorship strategies for events to make the events cost neutral or raise money.
  • Coordinate donation drives (go fund me example) for targeted projects.

7. Provide administrative support to Swarthmore Town Center, Inc.  (STC)

  • Prepares and distributes agenda for monthly STC meetings and attends all meetings.
  • Prepares and presents Coordinator Report for each STC meeting.
  • Coordinates calendar and room reservations for monthly STC meetings.
  • Maintains and ensures invoices and premiums are paid for Town Center related expenses.
  • Provides input to budget and helps coordinate response to Borough request for funding.

 8. Serves as STC representative to Borough Council and its committees on matters relating to the Town Center and businesses.

  • Attends General Government and Borough Council meetings, as needed.
  • Keeps Council representative informed on issues and events.
  • Works with Public Safety Committee on issues related to parking and street closures.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Highly organized
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with website management and social media tools
  • Heightened sensibility in planning and design: some experience in placemaking or urban planning desirable
  • Works well independently with minimal supervision
  • Diplomacy in managing competing interests (“political acumen”)
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
